Vancouver in 1950 had a “grave problem of hoodlumism,” according to the Vancouver Sun. “Gangs of cowardly clowns in zoot suits, tanked full of malevolence and loganberry wine, are defying law and order in the city of Vancouver.” An estimated 10 to 12 neighbourhood-based youth gangs were active in the city, with membership rolls ranging… Continue reading Gangland Vancouver

11 Octobre – Tale of the Hibiscus + Character Study: “The Jar of A Legend” and its Protagonist, Sántha Negrescu
One of the things that changed was my grandparents’ residence. From Westmount to Lorne Park, they moved to an estate inspired by a French chateau: an expansive gateway, with squarish entrance, that led to the narrow, cobblestone pathway. The pathway led to a white-bricked building with five, large windows and a blue roof. The mansion was surrounded by arboraceous space. Tall trees of many types filled the land and stood protectively like soldiers guarding the area. When asked about their decision to move, my grandparents simply said they wanted to retire. I had a feeling they chose this residency for it reminded them of what we kids would call “the old country”—Romania.

24 Mai – Tale of the Hibiscus: “Montréal was sinking”
